In late 2007, six people were indicted for using 350 credit cards stolen from health club locker rooms in five states. "It's easy to open a key padlock," says David Rible, a master locksmith in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. "And combo locks that have a long shackle [the U-shaped piece that links through the locker door] can be clipped with a pair of pliers." Rible suggests upgrading to a steel combination lock with a covered shackle, like the Squire CP1C, left.
There's no way to pick it, and a thief would have to try 4,000 combinations to break into it. We're converts because, let's face it, we have more important things to worry about at the gym (like snagging our favorite elliptical).--M.S.
